Tom Young, master craftsman, has been glassblowing and making lamp-work glassware for over 50 years. He is now in his seventies and is still producing designs and products from when he first started in the 1960's.
In the heart of Scotland, Bridge of Allan, Tom was born in Glasgow and worked as a scientific glassblower for various chemical companies. In 1967 Tom moved to set up a brand new Chemistry glassblowing department in Stirling University. In 1979 Tom left the University to develop his craft and skill into the gift market and started making giftware for an international market. Trading then as Village Glass he trained many apprentices some of which are still in glassmaking today. His Factory and Studio became a centre for excellence and his products went worldwide. From Japan to South America his designs and products were requested internationally.
As well as the supply of independent retailers, Tom also supplied major international department stores and national department stores with his timeless products. Winning many accolades also locally, as a tourist attraction, people came from all over to visit his studio in the heart of Bridge of Allan. Scotland. Tom now has his own studio beside his home. The designs are ever popular, timeless pieces of glass which are made completely by hand and hand painted. Each piece is signed and dated and may hopefully become the "Antiques of the Future".
Tom has created & designed works of art in many different fields from Glass Christening Fonts in the local Church, to Whisky Spirit Safe Bowls- intricate glass bowls made as part of the production of whisky in Scotland. If you look in most distilleries around Scotland and peer in the Spirit Safes, chances are Tom will have made them.
Johnnie Walker & Diageo has a huge connection with Tom and his glass, not only in his Scientific distilling side, but his gift for design and bespoke glassware. He has made glass pens to accompany every bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Whisky on it's launch and only recently he was commissioned to supply the glass component for the Johnnie Walker Cup Golf Trophy, played at Gleneagles Golf Club.
Tom, his wife Bette and daughter Karen all still have a hand in keeping Young Glass very much actively producing and designing fabulous pieces of glass, unique to Scotland and the lamp-work glass industry. If you would like to get in touch regarding any of our products please contact us.
